FARM IN NARANJO RECEIVES THE AWARD AS THE BEST COFFEE OF COSTA RICA

May 24, 2016

A lot of coffee grown in the Sumava farm in Lourdes de Cirrí de Naranjo, at 1,700 meters of altitude, achieved the highest and exceptional score of 93.41 during the international cupping tests of the beans that are going to participate in the Ninth Edition of the Excellence Cup, 2016, auction that will take place on June 21st, via Internet.

For the Excellence Cup, coffee Producers who are duly registered with the Costa Rican Coffee Institute, ICAFE, participate. It is organized by the Specialty Coffees Association of Costa Rica (SCACR), entity that represents the organization of the Alliance for Excellent Coffee (ACE), and is possible thanks to the sponsorship of ICAFE, BAC SAN JOSE, Coricafé, Exclusive Coffees, Tesoros del Café, CoopeDota, R. L., Volcafé, Santa Laura Exportadora de Café and Grain Pro Costa Rica.

It is about beans of the Caturra variety with highly complex cup characteristics, with fruity aromas and a spectacular sweetness which is the feature and main attribute of coffee because it was harvested until the optimal ripening, with sweet and strong flavors of prunes and cranberry, a citrus flavor like tangerine and a very clean after-taste.

According to Francisco Mena of Exclusive Coffees, S. A., traditionally Exporter and today Producer, ²the coffee has some very high sugar degrees; the climate also helped this year because it was very dry and we were able to wait for the bean to ripe to perfection before gathering it. ²

Farms of Cirrí de Naranjo area have already given four of Costa Rica best coffees with separate Milling facilities, but always on neighboring coffee farms: Manantiales, Vista Al Valle, Herbazú and Sumava.

For Wayner Jiménez, Cupper and Quality Assurance Manager of this company, ²it is a sweetness that is present in the post-nasal part and very much so in the after-taste. We performed on it a new process that we call Sweet Sugar, which consists in allowing the coffee to rest with the mucilage for the bean to absorb its flavor.²

In the opinion of Flory Marín, International Cupper and purchaser for Monmouth Coffee Co. of England, analyzing these coffee lots was a unique experience and the last ten, exceptional. She added that it is very difficult to arrive in a country and find this diversity of clearly defined flavors on one table. ²They were coffees with floral intensities, fruity and specific flavors of each coffee, with their own identity. One feels here the origin of the coffee and the seal that the Producer in the farm and in the Milling facility imprints on it.

She reminded that there are many Roasters who are looking for excellent quality coffees and willing to pay a prize. She said that this is the beginning of a new movement in specialty coffees.

Of the 21 coffee lots that classified, SCACR will send samples in gold preparation to clients around the world so that they can roast and taste them, and bid for them in the Auction on June 21st with a base price of $5.5 per pound.
